Remediation Challenge

Development Practice

Published on February 06, 2021

The challenge for the second week of Development Practice was to select an initial artefact, go through an ideation session using the techniques discussed and modify the artefact. After a lot of overthinking I created a new Mind Map Miro board and started writing down the ideas that came to my head.

Ideation

In the centre of the Mind Map, I started with the word Transformation. I knew I needed to transform something and already knew I wanted to use Blender to improve on my 3D modelling skills.

On the right side, I focused on how an object can be transformed and on the left, what I will be transforming. The two ideas morphed into one after I decided to represent games as new dimensions.

I chose to transform the PlayStation 4 console as I find it easiest to model. I've created a short animation that shows the gaming console as a portal to a new world and new adventures waiting.

The portal to every adventure

In retrospect

A lot of time was wasted thinking about what I can do, instead of focusing on the main purpose of the challenge - the ideation. After I focused on it, the final idea very quickly came to light. In the future, I will focus on the main purpose of the challenge rather than the specifics of what I can make.

During the development process, I experienced small difficulties due to being used to other 3D modelling tools. Reviewing my keybindings would be essential to reduce the mistakes and increase the speed of modelling in the future. Additionally, experienced an issue when rendering the particle system. The resulting glitch can be seen in the video roughly half-way through the animation as the particle system becomes smaller for a second. Further research into Blender's particle systems would be necessary to understand and fix such issues in the future.
