Rapid Ideation Session 2 - Planning and Goals
Development Practice

Goals
Similarly to the first Rapid Ideation Session, I started with defining the goals I would like to achieve.
| Goal | Goal 1 | Goal 2 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specific | Create a 2D game | Include incremental aspects | |
| Measurable | The final prototype should be a 2D game | The final prototype should be clasifyable as an incremental game | |
| Achievable | Unity Engine is one of the best at creating 2D games | I will consider incremental games when brainstorming and reduce the balancing to a minimum to ensure I can complete the prototype | |
| Relevant | I have only made 3D games so far. They however take a lot more time to make, so it is likely my first publish games would be 2D. Gaining this experience now would help me achieve that | Incremental games are very popular on mobile. Mobile games would be my first target when starting my studio due to the large audience and easy monetisation. This makes the genre a good candidate to gain more experience in | |
| Timely | To be achieved over the two weeks of Rapid Ideation Session 2 | ||
Theme
The theme for this rapid ideation session is Hackathon - our creations should be guided towards solving a problem.
The first direction I researched was about Citizen Science. I investigated where it was used and what I could do to contribute. However, the field seemed quite deep and I would have spent too much time in research. Instead, I wanted to follow the advice given in the weekly webinar - jump into development without too much planning.
The problem I ended up focusing on was Gender Pay Gap.
Ideation
In line with the hackathon theme, I spent significantly less time ideating prior to beginning the development. I started with research on the issue and created a rough list of mechanics I could include in the game.
During my research, I learned some interesting facts, most notably that men are more likely to ask for a pay rise than women (Bosquet et al., 2019) (Javdani and McGee, 2019). I decided to incorporate that in the game as it would increase the awareness of the issue and add flavour to the game.
Due to the way I handled this ideation session, it look a lot less time than the first one. Additionally, I skipped the goal I had set myself in week 5 of the course to use the ICEDIP technique in this session. I felt it wasn't appropriate with the advice to dive into the prototype. However, this time I spent more time understanding the problem I want to focus on due to the broad nature of the theme. In the future I want to spend more time ideating before game jams to solidify my skills.
